Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) was one of the most important French composers and music theorists of the Baroque period and was famous for his revolutionary harmonic techniques. However, his work fell out of fashion at the end of the eighteenth century and it was not until the twentieth century that interest in it was renewed and his work is now more frequently recorded and performed. The opera Les Boréades is a lyrical tragedy with a mythological theme, which was never performed during the composer's lifetime. It was first performed in the twentieth century in 1964 and the triple CD performed by Collegium 1704 under the baton of Václav Luks is only the second recording of this fascinating work in history. In 2020, the CD won the prestigious French Trophées award for the best opera recording of the year and was included in two selections of Gramophone magazine (Editors' Choice, Critics' Choice 2020).
